The anomaly, properly known as the aurora borealis, often occurs closer to the North Pole, between Alaska and Canada.

Although the tempest may push the aurora further south on Thursday and Friday, they should have been visible in areas of Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Oregon if the atmospheric circumstances permitted.

What takes place during a geomagnetic storm?

A coronal opening, which is the black area on the Sun, causes strong gusts during the tempest, which in turn causes coronal mass ejections or CMEs. Plasma and attractive fragments of the Sun’s magnetic field are released into the atmosphere by a CME. 

The tempest started on Sunday and is supposed to peak Thursday at a G3 level (G5 is the highest estimate of the tempest’s force) and stop on Friday. 

Many CMEs have been released from the Sun, although according to the NOAA, “most are supposed to have essentially minimal influence at Earth, in any event, no fewer than four have possible Earth-coordinated portions.”

The Sun’s behavior is erratic, yet there are areas where the aggravations are attractive because they may push the Earth’s magnetic field away from our planet. 

But when it’s delivered, the attractive field snaps back like a tight elastic band, and the strength of that force creates powerful waves called Alfvén waves some 80,000 kilometers from the starting point. Due to the planet’s attractive pull, the waves accelerate as they get closer to Earth.

Jim Schroeder, a Wheaton College associate professor of material science who has led research on the interaction, called it “Ponder surfing.” We discovered that electrons were surfing because they were moving at the proper speed for a wave to catch them and accelerate them. If they were traveling at a speed that was appropriate in relation to the wave, they would be caught and accelerated.

How to view the aurora

You don’t need any special equipment to view auroras.

Choose a location with less light pollution.

If it is possible, ascend to a higher level.

Look through the forecast for any signs of mists or precipitation that can obscure your view.

Even though they are named after the northern hemisphere, they may appear from all directions. 

When we think about traveling to a very cold and northern region of the planet to witness the Northern Lights, we could even picture ourselves viewing the aurora borealis, commonly known as the northern lights, from inside a glass igloo.

Although you don’t need to go outside of the nation to view the Northern Lights, Alaska is often the only place in the United States where you may see them. The Northern Lights are often not visible to those of us living in the lower 48 states, but residents of Alaska and the northern regions of Canada may view them without having to go very far.

If you reside in a state other than Alaska this week, maybe tonight or tomorrow night, you could be able to view the Northern Lights from your own backyard, possibly a neighbor’s backyard, or even a nearby park. You see what I mean.

The Northern Lights may be visible in regions of Oregon, Iowa, and Pennsylvania as a result of a geomagnetic storm. You should first view the weather in order to see the auroras. The likelihood of rain or cloud cover makes it hard to see the Northern Lights. If the sky is expected to be clear, you should find out a location with as little light pollution as you can (i.e., not in a city or close to a lot of street lights) and, preferably, find out a hill or an area with a high elevation.
